WoW Tokens Hit An All Time High, Possibly Thanks To Destiny 2

After Activision and Blizzard revealed on Thursday that Destiny 2 will be available for PC through Blizzard's Battle.net platform, the price of tokens in World of Warcraft jumped to an all-time high.

Destiny 2 being on Battle.net has had some interesting repercussions so far, even though the announcement is only days old. Players realized quickly that, with Blizzard's own Blizzard Launcher app, they could talk to Destiny 2 players while hanging out in one of Blizzard's other PC titles. The game appearing on Battle.net also means Activision doesn't have to split their PC profits with Steam, but most importantly that WoW tokens could be used to purchase Destiny 2. So naturally, the price of those tokens skyrocketed.

As Kotaku breaks it down, "in February of this year Blizzard changed how the tokens function, allowing players to redeem them for $15 in Blizzard Launcher (aka Battle.net) credit as well. All of the sudden, WoW Tokens became a whole lot more valuable, leading to a spike in the amount of gold they could buy via the auction house as dedicated players looked to unload some of their excess gold for other Blizzard products, ranging from Hearthstone card packs to Overwatch loot boxes."

After that change, WoW tokens shot up to 111,269 gold each before levelling off again. That's the sort of economic spike we expect to see after such an announcement.

Now with Destiny 2, the tokens again saw a major spike, shooting up to  140,171 gold before levelling off to a new price of 120k.

Now, wether that new normal will still hold in a few weeks when the announcement has become old news is uncertain. But given the tokens previous trends, it's likely that 120k gold will hold as the price for WoW tokens. At least for a while before spiking up again come Destiny 2's release date in September.
