This Day in Pop Culture History

Welcome to This Day in Pop Culture History, a daily look at important events, birthdays, and other oddities in pop culture! History is important, and we aim to educate here at Bleeding Cool. So without further ado, here are some things that have happened on May 15th, the 135th day of the year.

1973- Nolan Ryan throws his first no-hitter.

1981- SCTV Network 90 debuts on NBC.

1982- “Ebony and Ivory” hits number 1 on the Billboard chart, where it would stay for seven weeks.

1987- Ishtar opens in theaters. It is widely considered to be the worst film of all-time.

Today in gaming history saw the release of New Super Mario Bros (2006), Marvel Trading Card Game (2007), Diablo III (2012), Game of Thrones (2012), Max Payne 3 (2012)

Today in Pro Wrestling history, in 1995 on an episode of Raw, Hunter Hearst Helmsley, formerly Terra Ryzing in WCW, makes his Raw debut. Helmsley would of course go on to found Degeneration X with Shawn Michaels, elevate DX to even greater heights after Michaels first retirement, and eventually become The Game and win multiple championships. Triple H now holds the title Executive VP of Talent, Live Events, and Creative. He still wrestles as well, his latest match being against Seth Rollins at last months Wrestlemania 33. He is also married to Stephanie McMahon.

Today in Bleeding Cool history, in 2012 a bunch of classic, original Marvel covers went up for sale through heritage auctions. Including Spider-Man #1 by Todd McFarlane.

Sadly today we lost June Carter Cash in 2003.

Happy National Chocolate Chip Day!

Today in Disney history, in 1928 Mickey and Minnie Mouse debut together in the short film Plane Crazy at a sneak preview on Sunset Boulevard. The short would have sound added to it and officially be released in March 1929, 4 months after Steamboat Willie.

Let’s end today with some Johnny and June.
