Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Has Second Biggest Opening Of 2017 With $145 Million Box Office Take

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has earned an estimated $145 million at the box office this weekend, making it the second biggest opening weekend of 2017 behind Beauty and the Beast, which opened to $175 million back in March. GotG2 benefitted from favorable opinion of the original film, which has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a strong marketing campaign bolstered by the fact that everything director James Gunn posts on Facebook immediately becomes a clickbait news story on every entertainment website. Speaking of which, Gunn thanked fans for supporting the film on Facebook yesterday, and followed up with another thanks after the weekend estimates came in on Twitter:

Of course, the number one factor according to scientific experts is the extreme cuteness of Rocket Raccoon and Baby Groot. GotG2 doesn't appear to be as favorably reviewed as its predecessor though, with the Rotten Tomatoes score dropping to 81% for the sequel. That being said, the audience score for both movies is comparable, at 92% for GotG and 90% got GotG2.

No other movie earned more than $10 million at the box office this weekend besides Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and the looks clear next week, according to an expert cursory glance at the release schedule, for the movie to perform strongly once again, before Alien: Covenant comes out on May 19th. GotG2 was already performing well internationally, and its global total is now at $427 million dollars.
