Rian Johnson Asked J.J. Abrams To "Do Him A Solid" And Change The Ending Of The Force Awakens

star wars: the last jediWhen you're dealing with an interconnected universe like Star Wars with multiple directors and writers telling different stories, it's important that everyone is on the same page.

Rian Johnson started working on Star Wars: The Last Jedi even before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so it was probably a good thing that he got a look at the final scenes of the movie and found a slight problem.

As we know, Rey goes off to find Luke Skywalker at the end of The Force Awakens. But she doesn't go alone — she takes R2-D2 and Chewbacca with her. However, Rey was accompanied by a different droid in the original script, as Johnson revealed to Entertainment Weekly.

"Yes … The big [favor] was, I asked if R2 could come with Rey, and if BB-8 could stay behind with the Resistance," Johnson says. "Originally it was BB-8 who went with Rey, which makes sense for the story in a way. But I asked, 'Can you do me this solid and switch the droids?'"

It makes sense that Rey would take BB-8 with her, because that was the droid she bonded with throughout the movie. But it appears that Johnson has other ideas for what adventures our favorite orange ball is going to go on.

When writing, Johnson also had another juggernaut on his mind: Luke Skywalker.

"Figuring out where his head was at was the very first thing I had to do when writing the movie. I had to crack this. And it had to be something for me that first and foremost made sense. Why did Luke Skywalker go off to this island?" Johnson says. "That was the starting point, and that's what the entire movie explores… There has to be a good reason that makes sense to him [to run away] — and to some degree makes sense to us."

Johnson appears to have put a lot of thought into the little details of this movie, thus showing how much he respects the franchise and how much he wants to make us all happy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released on December 15th.
