This Day in Pop Culture History

Welcome to This Day in Pop Culture History, a daily look at important events, birthdays, and other oddities in pop culture! History is important, and we aim to educate here at Bleeding Cool, so without further ado, here are some things that have happened on May 4, the 123rd day of the year:

1959- The first Grammy Awards is held.

1977- David Frost interviews Richard Nixon.

2007- Spider-Man 3 is released in theaters.

2012- Avengers hits theaters in the US, shatters opening weekend box office numbers (later to be broken by Star Wars: Force Awakens).

Today in gaming saw the release of Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain (2004), Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005), Spider-Man 3 (2007).

Today in Pro Wrestling history, the WWF presented Insurrextion from Wembly Arena in London. This would be the final PPV with the company known as the World Wrestling Federation, or WWF. A couple days later, a British court found the World Wildlife Fund should own the rights to the initials WWF. Because of the ruling, World Wrestling Federation would change its name to World Wrestling Entertainment, of WWE. Programming blurred out the old logo in past footage, and logos were altered on championship belts to reflect the change as well.

Today in Bleeding Cool history, in 2011 and following up on yesterdays Adam Hughes sketch story, J Scott Campbell chimed in. And in 2014, I wrote a little about my history with Star Wars. Cute pictures of my daughter included.

Today’s Birthdays include Audrey Hepburn actress (1929), Dick Dale musician (1937), George Will journalist (1941), Ana Gasteyer actress (1967), Will Arnett actor/comedian (1970), Erin Andrews journalist (1978), Lance Bass musician (1979), Rory McIlroy golfer (1989)

Sadly, we also lost two legends today as Adam Yauch (2012) and Dick Ayers (2014) passed away today.

Happy International Firefighters Day!

Today is also Anti-Bullying Day.

And, of course, Happy Star Wars Day! May the Forth be With You!

And my all-time favorite piece of music.
