Nintendo Releasing The New Nintendo 2DS XL In July

You're going to be getting a new 2DS this year, which is sort of baffling to us, but we'll get to that in a second. Late yesterday, Nintendo released details of the New Nintendo 2DS XL, with a suggested retail price of $150, which Nintendo says will "offers pricing and features that fit between the Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL systems." Here's a glimpse of the new system due out on July 28.

The system will be released the same day as Hey! PIKMIN and Miitopia, has built-in NFC support for amiibo cards and figures and will be able to play all the games available to 3DS players (including download titles). While this is all cool and everything… we really have to question why Nintendo chose now to release a new DS of any kind. First off, the summer instead of the holiday season is very weird, but so was the Switch release and the numbers say it's the best thing going for Nintendo today. Second, there wasn't a lot wrong with the 2DS or the current 3DS models other than bits of compatibility and all the other issues people already have with them, so this new one doesn't seem to add anything special to the mix. I guess we're just a little baffled as to why. If we get our hands on a copy we'll be sure to delve into it more, but for now, we're all just standing by for July.
