Why The Grandmaster Isn’t Blue In Thor: Ragnarok

We’ve all seen the trailer for Thor: Ragnarok and got a good look at Jeff Goldblum playing the Grandmaster. The character, an Elder of the Universe along with Benecio del Toro’s Collector, has been around a long time in the Marvel Universe but usually looks like this:

But Goldblum is playing him like this:

So why isn’t he blue? This is the reason:

According to director Taika Waititi in an interview with iO9, he wanted nothing to distract from Goldblum’s performance… and that the actor has already done a role once with blue skin. The 1988 flop Earth Girls Are Easy. Would people really think of an almost 30 year old movie if they’d chosen to go with Grandmaster’s comic book look? Maybe if Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans were sitting with him.
