Dan Didio Blames Publishers For Poor Performances At Diamond Summit 2017 (VIDEO UPDATE)

The Diamond Summit 2017 is underway in Chicago ahead of C2E2. And Bleeding Cool has eyes and ears on the floor.

First DC Comcis co-publisher Dan DiDio thanked everyone for coming and promised that they will not just be reading solicitation info.

He hears so much conversation talking about comics, but he finds most interesting the basic topic of “how digital is taking over, stores closing, doom and gloom scenarios, etc”. Says this is an old topic that has been going on for decades. (Showed a cover from Comics Journal from way back claiming the industry was dying).

But there is 9% growth every year since 2011. And Dan DiDio is blaming publishers for poor store performances. Sales are high overall, because of diversification in stores. But individual titkle sales are lower.  But points out that DC Comics has better selling titles across the range of titles… and using ComicChon’s statistical estimates to do so! Watch him talk it out above.

“Rebirth” sells copies just by being on the cover. 25% of titles sell fewer copies than Diamond has accounts for. Meaning at least ¼ of stores aren’t ordering copies of stuff.

What’s that about Dark Matter? Oh, that’s to come….
