University Of Utah To Start Varsity ESports Team
The University Of Utah probably isn't the first place you think of when it comes to gaming or eSports, but the college itself has become a spot for several tournaments over the past few years and even have their own video gaming major through their Entertainment Arts & Engineering program. Now it appears the college will be taking the first steps to making eSports an official college sports team.
The EAE Department announced today that they will be the first college out of the Power Five (Pac-12, Big Ten, Big 12, Atlantic Coast, Southeastern) to have a varsity eSports team, starting with League Of Legends and adding more games to the list as time goes on. More than likely we'll see CS: GO, Overwatch, and Halo 5 added to the list down the road. Outside of the Power Five, there are 12 other colleges who have this kind of program, most of them playing LoL with varying degrees of results. But now that a Pac-12 college has stepped up to offer this as a legit sports option, it will be interesting to see how other colleges respond and what kind of impact that may have in terms of the NCAA getting involved. Might be cool in to see someone earn a big college scholarship being an eSports player. What do you think?
