The Mad Hatter Wants To Control Your Mind: Batman/TMNT Adventures #5

batmantmnt5

When Donnie figures out that the Mad Hatter had put honing devices on all the rogues that are in Gotham (before they landed in Manhattan), things pick up. They especially pick up when he realizes Hatters ultimate plans; to control the mind of everyone in Gotha–er–Manhattan. (Maybe both?!) It ties up the five issue run neatly and gave fans a taste of what could be if these superheroes all lived in the same dimension.

Batman, Robin, and even Batgirl play excellent straight men to the somewhat goofy Donnie and Mikey. Mikey is all of us in this series. He's living out his unrealized dream to fight along the Dark Knight and he's having the goddamn time of his life. When Robin and Mikey head back to Gotham, there's a beautiful homage to the opening of The Animated Series. Jon Sommariva pays close attention to detail with bringing that iconic opening to the pages of this comic, and it's stunning (see pics).

Matthew K. Manning has done exceedingly well with this run. I wish he had given Batgirl some more lines, but since this was a large ensemble group I understand it can be hard to focus on secondary characters. You don't really need character development here; almost all of us are familiar enough with everyone presented. The story is engaging and terribly fun to read. I sincerely hope he expands on this universe beyond 5 issues.
