#HotBetty: Riverdale #1

Since Riverdale is the new hotness with teenagers, it would only make sense that a TV show based on a 75-year-old comic series would turn around and get a comic series of it's own. Because why not? According to Archie Publications:

From Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and the writers of the new CW series Riverdale comes the first issue of the MUST-READ, brand new, ongoing comic series. Set in the universe of the TV series, the Riverdale comic offers a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, Josie & the Pussycats and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness bubbling beneath Riverdale's wholesome facade.

The first issue isn't a re-introduction to the characters. It drops you right at the beginning of the school year, after Archie makes the football team and Betty and Veronica join the River Vixens. It goes into more detail about what Archie and Betty go through in order to be accepted on their respective teams (also known as "hell week"). We don't really gain any new insight to the characters as they're already fleshed out well on the show. But it's a fun companion read for the show and unless you aren't following Riverdale I can't give you a good reason to not pick the book up.

Writer Will Ewing takes the already established characters and works well within their established parameters to build on an extended universe. Artist Joe Eisma is also a good fit. His art is minimal, but gets the point across. Especially with his closeups. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is the Chief Creative Officer for Archie Comics and is also the series Showrunner for Riverdale is the writer for the comic, so I'm confident it won't stray at all.

Riverdale #1 will be available at comic shops on April 5th with a cover price of $3.99.
