How Did Donald Trump Affect The TV Adaptation Of Neil Gaiman's American Gods?

When American Gods debuts on Starz on April 30th, fans of the bestselling book by Neil Gaiman may notice some differences from the source material. One of those differences, as noted by Bleeding Cool back in December, will be a new character named Vulcan who addresses America's fixation on firearms. But there will be some other differences, according to co-showrunner Bryan Fuller, thanks to President Donald Trump. Following a screening of the upcoming show at SXSW, Fuller said:

It's definitely a different show than we set out to make because the political climate in America sh** its pants. We're now telling massive immigration stories in a climate that vilifies immigrants. And so we have a strange new platform to start a different kind of conversation.

Fuller also said that the show expands on several female roles, counteracting what he called "a sausage party between Shadow and Wednesday" in the original novel.

Responding on Twitter to complaints about politically charged entertainment, United Nations ambassador Gaiman tweeted:

The 8-episode first season stars Rickie Whittle, Ian McShane, and Emily Browning. Watch the trailer below:
