#BoycottMCOC Gets Traction: Checking Back In With Marvel Contest Of Champions

Back on Friday I'd posted an article detailing the community reactions to the latest update, 12.0, in Kabam's Marvel Contest of Champions. Many players, including several prominent youtubers in the community, were unhappy with the changes. They'd been unhappy with the planned changes for weeks and once the update went live, continued to be rather vocally unhappy about it. And Kabam had been very much silent on the matter. That changed Friday evening.

RichTheMan, one of the Youtube content creators in the MCOC community, finally returned on Friday just before Kabam's response to give his full thoughts on 12.0 and his hopes for the future of the game despite what he felt was a bit of dishonesty on Kabam's part about the detail given prior to the update. He spent a decent bit of time talking about the divide between youtubers, players, and the game developers. A dev at Kabam had reached out to him about his father's wellness, and so Rich took the opportunity to ask about what Kabam's response would be now that the story had caught some attention. He got back a generic statement, likely from a PR rep. Ultimately, Rich's point was that Kabam needed to reverse some of the changes they made to keep the game being fun. Because of course you want a game to be fun, otherwise why play it?

Well, finally Kabam joined the discussion. On March 3rd at 7PM EST, the Marvel Contest of Champions Facebook page had a new post which linked to a lengthier apology on their forum. The Facebook post mostly apologized and said that Kabam were planning to revamp a few of the changes made to account for player feedback. Do note, this was roughly 3 days since the update. The Facebook post is below.

The post on their forums went into further detail about what exactly Kabam feels needs changing. Those are as follows:

  • The severity of some Champion adjustments
  • Difficulty tuning of Realm of Legends, Labyrinth of Legends and other harder content within the game
  • The current difficulty of the game and the way that Parry is functioning

Further details about the upcoming changes will be revealed tomorrow. We can only hope that Kabam has decided to listen closely to players and manages to tweak things in a way that allows for a smoother transition between MCOC as it stood before 12.0 and what Kabam hope to make of it moving further.

Seatin Man of Legends, another youtuber whom I turned to for the opinion on update 12.0, has since responded to Kabam's message to their followers. Was that "this announcement is great," but that it means nothing until the fixes are implemented. Until then he is "110% still behind the Boycott MCOC movement." He also had a bit of a tinfoil hat conspiracy on why Kabam has responded the way they have since he dragged Marvel Games head Bill Roseman into the MCOC debate on twitter. At the very least, Rosemann seems to be on the side of the players at least somewhat. Which is very, very good news for the MCOC community at large.

Hopefully guys, we get better news on Monday. As personally, I agree with Captain Bayee on this one.

We will be following up with this story as it continues to develop. My coverage of the community reactions to update 12.0 can be found here.
