Bad News Switch Fans, Save Data Can't Be Transferred Or Saved

The Nintendo console launched just this past week, and despite favorable reviews all around, I'm about to give you some disheartening news. Your game save data can't be transferred or copied. So, you won't be able to switch it to a larger SD card at a later date, put it on an external drive, or even swap it to a new Switch with a larger internal drive (which, if they follow the usual console trend will be in about two years or so).

This news comes to you from Kotaku who got a statement from Nintnedo saying that, "at this time, it is not possible to transfer save data from one Nintendo Switch system to another," while the online FAQ page says that "game save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card." And GameInformer has reported that they were unable to find any possibility for data transfer.

So, you'll have to delete your save game data to make space on the consoles pitiful 32GB internal storage unless you start off with a massive micro SD card. My advice? Go run to the nearest store selling you technology (Best Buy, Target, Wallmart) and get yourself a 2TB micro SD and then sit there and stare at your Breath of the Wild save data and quietly weep over your console.

It is likely that Nintendo will eventually roll out the option for external storage, as they had the capabilities on both the Wii U and 3DS. And both Sony and Microsoft had to do the same with their latest iteration of consoles – even if most of us don't have access to external storage space for game save data on the PS4 yet.
