A King's Tale: Final Fantasy XV was originally a pre-order bonus exclusive for those who pre-ordered Final Fantasy XV from Gamestop. Well, it will now be available for free on the Xbox and PlayStation stores on March 1st. It's a cute little pixel art side-scroller intended to be a bonus side-story to the main game.

The main conceit of A King's Tale is that it's a bedtime story told to Noctis by his father Regis, starring Regis as the king and with him are Cid, Clarus, and Weskham. The game features "Deep combat"which includes combos, counters, and Regis's signature warp strikes; three new companions with new abilities and tactics for players to try out and get familiar with; fire, ice, and lightning magic like in the full game; and summons of the game's pantheon of Astral entities for extra damage.

DualShockers, who originally reported the story, noted that the press release was rather unclear as to whether A King's Tale would be free to everyone, or just for those who purchased FFXV. The American arm of Square Enix responded, informing them that the game will be available for all North American players, not just those who purchased FFXV.

So if you want a brief glimpse into what all of your friends have been talking about the last few months regarding the boyband with Cup Noodle hats and upcoming patch to fix one of the later game stages that frustrated most people, you download A King's Tale and make a decently informed choice as to wether or not you want to take the leap of madness and buy FFXV or not.
