Ticket Booth: 'The Great Fist For Wellness'

Welcome to the next edition of Ticket Booth. As always no one can tell you how to spend your money, and if there is a movie here that you really want to see you should absolutely go see it. These are merely suggestions from a critic to her audience. While last week's releases covered the entire spectrum of filmmaking with two very strong entries, this week there are three entries that very few people are going to remember in a week; Fist Fight, The Great Wall and A Cure For Wellness.

lego batmanThe holiday means that it is going to be a long weekend for a lot of people. While this might be a time for some families to get out of the house, there are going to be plenty who want to stay in. When it comes to the family movie, there are no new options. The Great Wall is PG-13 and Fist Fight and A Cure For Wellness are both R. That means if you're a parent with some kids it's time to go see The LEGO Batman Movie. If they have already seen Batman and you want a weekend in with the kids, Star Wars: Clone Wars is leaving Netflix at the end of the month.

thegreatwallWhen it comes to the teenage demographic, they are also fairly limited in their options. Again, The LEGO Batman Movie appeals to everyone but there is a certain demographic that will want to see The Great Wall. However, it isn't worth the money. Perhaps if you have a leftover gift card from the holidays or a pass that lets you get into a movie for a dollar it might be worth the time. However, even then, the money spent on snacks wouldn't be worth it either. Arrival is out this weekend, rated PG-13, and absolutely fantastic. If you must see a movie in the theaters this weekend it is still Black History Month and Hidden Figures is great. If none of that sounds appealing they are taking Clueless off of Netflix next month.

Ticket Booth: 'The Great Fist For Wellness'As for the adults in the crowd looking for a chance to get away on the long weekend, they don't have much to work with either. Both of our R rated entries this week are hardly worth the time according to sources (since this critic was ill during both screenings and unable to make them). For Fist Fight our own Bill Watters says,

"Some of the audience in the screening I was in really seemed to be enjoying themselves, so some folks will evidentially find it funny, but I found it mostly halfhearted at best. The kind of laughs that you might get from the local community theater doing an improv night."

If you're looking for a comedy, The Edge of Seventeen is out this week and likely much better.

rs-a-cure-for-wellness-b97153ac-6f7b-4085-898b-6d0e52b0bc71As for A Cure For Wellness? Well, again I have not seen it, but from what other critics I trust — our own Bill Watters included — have told me it is high on the gross factor. It's a movie designed to make you gawk with shock because you cannot believe they just put that on screen. I cannot speak on behalf of it either way but I do suggest caution for those checking it out this weekend. Bill got into a screening, and while he liked it a lot, there were moments that made him squirm.

"There's some jump scares, and some scenes that are genuinely hard to watch (I have a particularly strong response to the graphic use of dental tools – I was definitely hiding behind my notepad for that scene)."

It might be worth waiting for a rental if you're unsure whether or not you can handle it. However, the horror fans it is appealing to are likely to support it without reading a single review.

Recommendations: The LEGO Batman Movie or a night of streaming Star Wars: Clone Wars before it leaves Netflix for the family. The Great Wall isn't worth spending your money on if you're a teenager, with other options like Hidden Figures or streaming Arrival and Clueless. The adults looking for a comedy are best skipping Fist Fight to stream The Edge of Seventeen while the adults looking for an R rated horror movie should do some serious research into A Cure For Wellness before heading to the theater. If you're unsure then it's likely worth waiting for a rental in a controlled environment.
