The Magicians - Season 2

The second episode of the second season of the Magicians takes our heroes… or at least most of them, back to where it begins: Brakebills. Everyone but Eliot leaves Fillory and heads back to school to try and find the spells for battle magic, and one spell in particular, the Reinemin Ultra. Which, as Eliot points out below, does sound like a beer. Because Eliot can't leave Fillory ever again, we end up with four storylines going on here, though two run parallel.

Quentin, Alice, Penny and Margo return to Brakebills to find Dean Fogg waiting for them. He explains that battle magic has been outlawed at the school and the former teacher, a Miss Biggs who is a fae, hid the spells in the library and told Fogg they would need them some day and her. That they wold be the Last Hope or something to that effect. They enlist Professor Sunderland who knows the library better than anyone. Biggs' final message was an anagram that lead to a book called Hotel Spa Potions, it had all the battle magic spells except for the one they wanted. That had a riddle as to where to find Biggs. Once the locate her, we discover she and Fogg used to be lovers and are still very affectionate towards each other. They convince her to give them the spell.

Julia on the other hand is dealing with The Beast who turns out loves to sing show tunes. For an evil psychopath, he has a wonderful voice. He decides to bring in Marina to help trap the trickster god, but Marina wants nothing to do with it. She leaves, contacts her equal on the opposite coast but finds her dead when she arrives. Marina tries to get sanctuary at Brakebills, but Fogg refuses it. Leaving her no choice but to go back and help Julia and the Beast. At one point the Beast reveals he left an enchantment on the castle that will keep Julia's friends from being royalty for long.

Back in Fillory, Eliot is dealing with things Kings have to deal with… like the fact that nothing is growing agriculturally because no one knows how to farm and just used magic. With the Well Spring almost dry, Eliot has to go back to his days of growing up as a farmer and teach his people about manure. He also finds his new wife is a bit straight laced for him, but seems to be trying.

And here is a sentence I never thought I'd type… Alice is starting to lose the power she got from drinking the semen of a god. And it will take time for her to cast the Reinemin Ultra, so the others have to give her time. Each one is given a tattoo and a fire demon-ish thing that they will be able to unleash when needed. The process was very painful. Also, Sunderland helped Penny get control of his cursed hands… and the two flirted a bit. But with his hands back, the killer spell and the fire demons they have to hurry back to confront the beast…

But Quentin take a moment and meets with Julia to let her know not to be near the Beast when they make their move. She tells him not to make the move until she's done with him. This is obviously going to be a problem down the line. And by down the line I mean soon, because it looks like the battle with the Beast is coming soon.

I think we can tell from the sneak peek below what The Beast left behind in the throne room… paranoia.
