Legends Of Tomorrow Shows Us Why Reverse-Flash Is Still Alive

Last week I said that the George Lucas themed episode may have been my favorite so far. Legion of Doom is a close second. In this episode, the writers flipped the script literally as the show went most from the bad guys' perspective including the opening voice over being done by Damien Darhk.

The Legion, which is currently made up of Darhk, Eobard Thawne and Malcolm Merlyn, are trying to get the location of the Spear of Destiny from Rip Hunter who doesn't have his memories and thinks he's an American film student from the 1960's named Phil. Three alpha male bad guys who are used to giving orders trying to work together is bound to have issues and this is no exception. Thawne is treating the others as lackeys and it's so bad that even Phil sees it.

While over on the Waverunner, Martin Stein decides to bring his Time Aberration daughter Lily on board to help connect the medallion to Gideon's CPU allowing the team to hunt down the fragments of the Spear of Destiny. While on board, Mick Rory lets it slip that Lily is an aberration and it leads to some history on Stein's father and we learn that the effects of alcohol can be felt through the Firestorm bond.

Back with the bad guys, Darhk discovers a barcode imprinted on one of Phil's teeth to a safety deposit box in Zurich, 2025. There is some squabbling between the Legion before Reverse-Flash runs off leaving Merlyn and Darhk to talk. Merlyn wants to know why Thawne never stays around long. Darhk doesn't trust Merlyn enough to join in on his distrust of Thawne. But they take Phil to the bank in 2025 and try to get whatever is there. Turns out they need the number, a retinal scan AND a password which Phil does not know. They fight their way out and escape.

The team is trying to figure out who the speedster is and why the time masters have no record of him. They start asking the same questions as Malcolm… why would a speedster need the spear or assistance? And it's finally Nate who realizes that the speedster needs to use the spear because he doesn't actually exist. And that makes Stein remember Thawne. Eobard Thawne erased from existence when Eddie Thawne killed himself. But he stayed alive because of his connection to the Speed Force. He needs to re-write reality to make himself exist again.

After fighting each other in front of Phil, Merlyn and Darhk decide to team up and head back to the bank at night to get whatever Rip Hunter left there. They fight their way in and find a disk in the box, Thawne appears and explains that it contains Rip's memories and the locations of the spear fragments. But before Thawne could run out, Merlyn closed the vault door. Trapping the Speedster in place until he talks and agrees to treat the others as true partners. Thawne begins to freak out because something is after him and he's afraid if he stays still too long it will find him. Something that is drawn to the speed force. Merlyn and Darhk agree to help him escape whatever is after him and let him out if Thawne agrees to a true partnership. He does.

They leave the vault and we see what is after Thawne… the Black Racer. Formerly Zoom, the Black Racer is the grim reaper for speedsters. But since it is attracted to the Speed Force being used, they have Thawne stay perfectly still and the Black Racer doesn't see him. They escape and head back to where they have Phil. They can now give him his Rip Hunter memories back… but Thawne decides to make a few alterations first.

I love the fact they addressed how Thawne is still around in enough of a pseudo-science way to seem plausible. It makes a lot of things seem to make sense… but again we are talking speedsters and time travel, so nothing truly makes sense. The utter insanity of this series is what makes it so much fun.

Next week Rip Hunter is back, but he's working for the bad guys and trying to kill George Washington.
