Rafael Albuquerque Shows Us Sketching With The Back Of A Pen

Rafael Albuquerque, artist on Batgirl and American Vampire, sits down in the DC Comics Art Academy without a pencil. You'd think that would be a show stopper, but it turns out that the artist has done something like this in the past and started sketching a Batman piece by using the bottom or back of a pen. The idea being to indent a rough sketch and then use ink to draw it. Which is an interesting idea, but not very visual. Luckily someone comes up with a pencil and Alburquerque was able to get on with his drawing while giving his personal history of getting into comics.

I kind of want to see what he could've done without the pencil.
