Viola Davis Says Amanda Waller Role Was 'Something So Often Not Given To Women'

The Suicide Squad film came in pretty underwhelming, and even though it certainly has its fans, at least where critics are concerned it was a total mess. What's sad about that is the film housed some great performances from Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney coming to life as Captain Boomerang.

viola-davis-as-amanda-waller__971419_Another was Viola Davis' wonderful turn as Amanda Waller. It was fearsome and scary in equal measure, and Davis clearly went for it. Now, it seems despite the reception to the movie, Davis did enjoy playing the character. Speaking to the Variety podcast, (via Cinemablend), Davis talked about what she liked about the character, and it is clear, it is all to do with badassery rarely seen in women's roles.

What was fun to me about Amanda Waller — who is heavy, pearls, afro — she has no superhuman strength, but absolutely just puts fear into the hearts of all these villains. That appeals to me greatly. There's something about her for me that was familiar. I was working out the bad girl, but from a space that, for me, is based somewhat in reality. I liked playing with that power. It's something so often not given to women, that kind of unapologetic badassery.

I hope that the DCEU does find its footing, and I do hope we see Waller back on screen. She is a huge presence, even for someone who isn't a superhuman.
