Aftermath Of An Accidental Date – Review Of Jughead #11

Jughead #11 hit shops today and it featured Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the aftermath of the date the two went on. It was written by Ryan North and had art by Derek Charm and Jack Morelli. I should probably add here that I haven't really read that much from the world of Archie Comics. I've seen them for years, but I was more into Daredevil and the Green Arrow than the teenage life of some red headed guy and his friends.

But with all the reboots they've been doing and the upcoming Riverdale series, I decided to read the issue and see what it was like. And where I would normally say these kind of comics aren't my thing… I really liked this. It was lighthearted, a bit silly and a lot of fun. North has a great feel for this odd universe that includes an asexual boy accidentally going out with a girl who can do magic. Jughead's simplistic but good-natured personality makes him extremely likable even with all of his quirks. North's commentary at the bottom of the pages are fun and the use of the Archie house style of art for the dream sequences is a nice touch.

A lot of comics have become extremely dramatic. Just saw images of Hawkeye and Amadeus Cho crying over the death of Bruce Banner. That's a good, dramatic storyline… but sometimes readers need fun escapism too. And that's something that Jughead #11 offers. Silly humor with the message of liking someone for who they are, not what they can do. That's a good message any time.
