James Gunn Blames “Imperfect World” For Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2 Kurt Russell Reveal

gotgv2Despite the secrecy surrounding Kurt Russell‘s role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 during pre-production and principle photography, his character’s name and relationship to a key Guardian was revealed last Saturday at Comic-Con International: San Diego. And, as director James Gunn explained it, it’s part of the “imperfect world” we live in and the reality of marketing the film.

As he wrote in a post on his Facebook page, Russell “is very much a part of all of it” and it would be difficult to cut trailers or present clips omitting him and the character.

But, perhaps more importantly, Gunn wanted control of revealing the character himself. “This was going to come out soon, as much as we’ve tried to hide it (when our online press day happened on set, Kurt Russell sat in a chair that read “J’son,” and all of our script pages and artwork featuring him used the same name),” he wrote. The confirmation that Russell was playing Ego and Peter Quill’s father was one of the biggest cheers during the Marvel presentation in Hall H last week. Followed by laughs thanks to a clip from the film featuring Drax openly questioning how Ego fathered a child. Controlling the reveal certainly led to an exciting moment for fans.

And though Russell’s identity in the film constitutes a spoiler of sorts, Gunn also explained that Ego — and his relationship to Peter Quill — is not a twist in the vein of classic spoilers like Darth Vader’s relationship to Luke, Soylent Green’s relationship to people or Barzini’s role in the Sollozzo business. “Ego [is] the emotional center of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 from the beginning to the end,” the director continued.

He also teased there will be many more surprises in the film, including how much people will enjoy the finished work.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens on May 5th, 2017.
