Comparing Benjamin Frisch's The Fun Family, Before And After
The Fun Family is cartoonist Benjamin Frisch's debut graphic novel, just out this week.
These opening pages have an intriguing history. Ben drew the book front to back and, as he drew, the characters evolved so when he got to the end, he re-drew the first four pages for publication. I think it's really interesting to see the original pages, and to see the characters' evolution from their first inception to their final form.
Let's compare them, the original against the final versions, alternating going down…
The Fun Family is a subversive look at the underbelly of the All-American family through the prism of Family Circus-esque Sunday morning comic strips. Frisch presents a surreal deconstruction of modern parenting, childhood nostalgia, and good old American narcissism. The book is on sale in booksytores now from Top Shelf Comix/IDW.
The Fun Family is a 240-page full-color softcover graphic novel with French flaps (6.5" x 9.25"), and retails for $19.99.
