Evolve Is Going Free-To-Play On PC While Developers Apologise For DLC Problems With The Game

I liked a Evolve a fair bit, but quite famously the game was ludicrously expensive and it failed to take off to the degree just about everyone was expecting. It had great ideas, but didn't have any kind of staying power in the zeitgeist.

Well, TurtleRock are going to try something new. Nearly a year and a half since the game came out, it has been announced that the game will be going free-to-play on PC. Not only that though, but the game is being put back into beta to be rigorously worked over. People who own the game already will be getting 'Founder Status' with DLC coming over and other rewards.

In an open letter to the community, the developer explained its journey and acknowledged the hype around the game, and also an understanding of why they thought the game failed, largely, because of the DLC issues. It reads:

When people first started playing Evolve at those and other conferences, it was magical. Sure, there was the AAA videogame hype surrounding our title. Yeah, we also had the flashy displays, the giant Goliath statue, and all the other things AAA games do to get people excited. And that stuff was cool. Really cool. But, what we lived for — what was cooler by far — was just seeing people play Evolve for the first time. We worked on it for years and then, suddenly, people got to experience our game, controller in-hand. There was genuine excitement — real joy — when people played. It was like nothing they'd ever played before and watching it happen was like no high we ever felt.

Then, when Evolve launched, the reception wasn't what we expected. Sure, there were some good reviews. There were also bad reviews. Yes, there was excitement. There was also disappointment – for players and for us. The DLC sh*tstorm hit full force and washed away people's enthusiasm, dragging us further and further from that first magical pick-up-and-play experience.

Honestly, I worry too much time may have passed, but I really would love to see this re-commitment by Turtle Rock pay off. It's a good game and it deserved better, with a genuine core gameplay loop that was great. To recapture the excitement the game had is going to be tough, but I hope they can pull it off.
