Gael García Bernal To Star As Zorro In Jonás Cuarón’s Z

ZDeadline reports Gael García Bernal has been cast as Zorro in Jonás Cuarón‘s Z, a reinvention of the pulp hero.

The film, written and directed by Cuarón, is reportedly set in the near future with García Bernal’s Zorro taking up the mask. Other details are under wraps, so it is unclear how much of the Zorro trappings will make the transition to Cuarón’s vision.

First appearing in 1919 in the pages of All-Story Weekly, Zorro made his film debut the next year in The Mark of Zorro; a silent film starring Douglas Fairbanks. The character continued to make film and television appearances, most recently in the form of Antonio Banderas in The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro.

Z is expected to being production in the fall.
