In advance of this weekend’s WonderCon convention in Los Angeles, Valiant just dropped a major piece of news for the character and series that spearheaded their hugely successful 2012 relaunch…
Later this year, after 56 issues, writer Robert Venditti’s long-standing run on X-O Manowar will conclude with a massive issue #50 milestone that will also double as the series finale.
Valiant has promised a series of “staggering plans” in the lead-up to issue #50, beginning with June’s X-O Manowar #47 – the first issue of a new storyline entitled “Long Live the King” by Venditti with artists Joe Bennett and Roberto de la Torre.
Part and parcel with those plans, Valiant is also launching the “X-O Manowar #50 Countdown Giveaway” with #47, which will significantly ratchet up the stakes of the original art game attempted by DC earlier this year… As part of the giveaway, X-O Manowar #47-50 will come bagged at no extra cost and feature one of 50 X-O Manowar 4×6 “micro-prints” by a high-profile artist randomly inserted into each issue…or possibly a hand-sketched piece original art. Valiant reps have inferred that the chances of finding such a piece will be relatively high… Watch this space for more on that soon.
X-O Manowar’s final arc will revisit a cosmic villain hinted at early in Venditti’s run – a mythic alien race called the Torment – and feature covers from a prominent list of creators including Kano, Phil Jimenez, Khoi Pham, Clayton Henry, Rafa Sandoval, David Lafuente and Jeff Lemire. They also promise to be working on the “anniversary cover to end all anniversary covers” for the #50 final issue.
It’s also worth noting that Venditti’s 56-issue run on X-O Manowar has broken several records: first as the longest tenure of any creator on a single title in Valiant history, and, second, as the longest in modern comics by any writer on a mainstream superhero series at the moment. As the single writer of the entire X-O Manowar title since day one – with no pauses, breaks, fill-ins, or co-writers in between – his run eclipses even Scott Snyder’s recent Batman run in length.
A current mainstay of both DC and Valiant, Venditti will continue to write Valiant’s Wrath of the Eternal Warrior in addition to other “as-yet undisclosed” projects.
Valiant’s announcement also hints at big plans in the works for X-O Manowar beyond #50 – even going so far as to point out that 2017 will be the character’s 25th anniversary… So don’t fret for X-O Manowar, he likely won’t be gone for long…
