Makarim Salman and Josh Raybuck write live from the Batman Retrospective panel at C2E2 with Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo.

Huge applause as Capullo as he worked the crowd coming in to a packed house

Snyder kicks off. He got told that Capullo liked to work from outline which kicked off some consternation between the two.

Greg's wife would see emails from Snyder and say "who is this guy?"

Scott will send long emails and get an emoticon back "with sunglasses".

Scott realized if he had a little more humility then he could learn a lot of Greg.

This is like the ultimate comics buddy movie!

Talking about the genesis of writing the book.  Snyder was terrified, nervous, and excited to start writing Batman.  Capullo joking about Snyder's long emails and scripts. Said to Scott, "I'm sure your mother is very proud of you."  Scott responded that yes, they are very close!  They were feeling each other out at first.

Both realized that it would be unfair to get the other to completely accommodate them. Capullo believes they are a better product as a result of this. It started with it is either him or me, and now they are brothers in and out of comics

These two really love their fans. Capullo asked the crowd to give themselves some applause for their support.

When Scott has an idea Greg is the first person he tells. Once they are a team DC have to deal with both of them. The best example according to Scott was with issue 5 where the comic has to turn. Scott asked Greg for ideas on how to make the issue look fractured. Greg came with the idea of turning the book. DC thought it was misprinted.. Greg wrote a really impassioned email quoting Geoff Johns and saying "sometimes we have to be foolish."

Greg hadn't factored in that half way through the book would have to change the way the pages rotated. When he saw it first he thought they messed up. But then he thought this makes it even crazier.

Whenever editorial push back on him, Capullo says "issue 5" in coughed tones

Scott said that every arc they try to up the ante because the book is so personal to them and they act as if every arc may be their last.

Snyder treated writing Batman like every arc was his last.  He knew it was important, and he took it very seriously.

Conflict resolution between the two of them – Greg said Scott would send him the beats with a lot of details, but then would put at the end "or whatever you want! :)"

This still brings a smile to Capullo's face

One example was the fly on the bat computer screen in death of the family. This fly motif carried through into later plots where the fly has now evolved into a moth now that both the joker and batman have transformed.

Scott gave him a lot of flexibility.

The flies around Joker's mask happened organically, on the fly, and became sort of a motif.  He and Scott have a partnership built on trust that gives the best end product, worth every cent of the fans money.

Scott said neither one of them phoned in anything on any of the 50 issues.  Took a lot of sacrifices.

Greg said their goal is to always be fluid and changing to always bring they best they can give to the fans

Scott would jump and do a book with Greg anywhere – DC, Marvel, Indy

Looking back at the book makes Scott happy because he can see the development of the relationship with his best friend Greg.

Greg: Scott is obsessive about what he does.  Every word matters.

Scott – They grew as a team and as friends.  Greg is his best friend.  Anytime Greg wants to do a book, he'll jump.  This is one of the best, if not the best friendship of his life.  They took risks on the book and did things off the beaten path.

Scott said issue 50 might be his favorite issue.  They gave a copy to a lucky fan in the crowd to read during the panel.  Scott's favorite line in the issue is when Bruce comes back and says "Hello, Jim. Who died and made you Batman?"  Scott is announcing something next week at Wondercon. He's going to still stay very involved in Batman.

Greg walked backwards in the centre aisle until someone pulled a copy of batman 50 out of his hands. The fan is reading it on the stage right now

Batman 50 has Scott's favourite line of all time he has written. Jim is being attacked by blooms. Bruce turns up. Jim says "is it really you" Bruce says "Jim. Who died and made you Batman"

Greg gave a very empowering speech, encouraging the crowd to 'be Batman'.

Next villain Scott has his eye on Two Face. Scott looks at all of us and says I can see your real face. When he is Dent he says "I believe in you". When he is Two Face he knows all your secrets – online, what you do physically, the skeletons in the closet.

This morning Scott pitched Greg his next stuff and the next stuff they are going to do together.

Questions and answers…

Who will win Dawn of Justice?

Scott – they were invited to the premiere but decided not to miss this panel!!!  No answer from either guy, though.

Who would have been the next villain if they kept going on the book?

Greg – Batman has the best rogues gallery. Would love to do Bane or Killer Croc. Catwoman or even Ivy.  Penguin, Clayface, all of them!

Scott – Two-Face.  He has lots of stories in his head.  Feels like Two Face knows all our secrets.

One thing you want people to remember your Batman as?

Greg – He's seeing the old issues through a different lens.  Hopes that they did Batman justice and did the fans proud.

Scott – He grew up with Frank Miller's Batman, scaring the bad guys back into the shadows. He feels their Batman inspires people to be brave and bring people out into the light.  Less intimidating and more inspirational.
