Memories And Nightmares In Batgirl #49

Nightmares and memories come together in the new issue of Batgirl this month, written by Brenden Fletcher and Cameron Stewart, with art by Horacio Domingues, Babs Tarr, Roger Robinson, Ming Doyle and James Harvey. In Batgirl #49, Babs has a new nemesis, and in order to unravel his secrets, her friends must take a journey through her mind. Just from the description alone, you can assume it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Barbara Gordon has been through a lot of hardships, and a lot of things that break your heart to watch happen.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read an issue of Batgirl. I had put it on my list of things to read once collected in a trade paperback. However, I’m happy that I dove into this issue. Fletcher and Stewart do a great job writing the script for this issue. Frankie teams up with a “copy” of Barbara fueled by the program that caused a lot of problems many issues ago. Together they journey through Babs memory in an attempt to solve the mystery. With that said, I’m going to tell you that the real draw of the issue is in the art. The mixture of five artists blew my mind. It was a fitting choice for an issue such as this because the characters are jumping into different memories and nightmares constantly. Then this happens…

Yep, that’s the Joker. Yep, that’s The Killing Joke. The whole theme of this issue comes down to the fact that perhaps some of the horrible things that have happened to Barbara in the past, haven’t actually happened. I’m not so sure how I feel about it, but I do know one thing. If you’ve set this title aside for whatever reason, this is a good issue to pick up. I’m intrigued by the storyline, and the end of the issue peaked my curiosity enough to look forward to the 50th issue!
