In a forty-minute talk with Deadline’s Peter Hammond, directors Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson discuss their use of 70mm film in their recent projects and their love of celluloid. Tarantino refers to the popular interest in 70mm as “film’s last stand.”
With Anderson’s The Master, distributor The Weinstein Company began installing 70mm projectors in select theaters, making Tarantino’s roadshow presentation of The Hateful Eight possible. Tarantino also noted filmmakers were not part of the discussion when theaters converted to digital projection.
The two discuss the first 70mm films they saw, the magic of the format’s larger audio bandwidth and the last of the Cinerama branded movies. It can be a real geeky conversation, but the enthusiasm on display illustrates how much two seasoned veterans can still love film; both in what it is and how one shoots it.
