Despite Dark Knight, Marvel Owns The Marketshare Of November 2015, As DC Starts To Recover Ground

Dark Knight III: The Master Race #1 was a monster of a hit. But it couldn't turn the tide too much from a Marvel on the rise – who put out three issues of Star Wars, including Star Wars Vader Down….

In October, Marvel Comics increased their share of revenue in the comic book direct market from 32.67% to 43.65% and their sale of number of comics sold increase from 38.12% to 48.26%.

While DC Comics saw their marketshare fall from 26.01% to 21.85% and 26.32% down to 22.92%. Frankly, just looking at the numbers, it was DC disasterous.

In November, Marvel's dollar share is down by a fraction to 43.2% and sales share down a similar fraction to 47.65%. DC does better going up to Septemer levels with a 26.35% dollar share and a 26.09% sales share. On the back of this, Image Comics has slipped slightly, with an 8.67% dollar share and a 10.02% unit share, and both IDW and Dark Horse also slip back slightly.

It is however worth noting that the comics market was up 30% on last November, both four week months. On October it is up 8% and for the year as the whole over 5%. The overall print market for comics continue to grow, so getting a smaller marketshare does not mean that a publisher's sales have fallen. Really worth remembering when panicking about what to do…

But Marvel had nine of the top ten, those three Star Wars titles, and the debuts of Deadpool, Extraordinary X-Men and All-New Wolverine. Outside of the top ten,The Walking Dead #148 came in at #21, Fight Club 2 #7 at #76, and Back to the Future #2 at #99.

Over on the graphic novel side, it was all about Sandman Overture but Marvel Comics saw their Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Shattered Empire, come in at second. While Image Comics' J. Scott Campbell: Time Capsule 1994-2004, a retrospective of the fan-favorite artist's first decade in comics, was the best-selling book in November.
