Flash / Arrow Crossover Event More Than Just A Backdoor Pilot

Mild Spoilers for last nights Flash.

Last night aired the first part of the crossover event between the Flash and Arrow that will lead into DC's Legends of Tomorrow. The Flash portion of the event entitled Legends of Yesterday introduced us to Vandal Savage, an immortal who gains power every time he slays a set of reincarnating Egyptian royals. And we meet Carter Hall, who along with Kendra Saunders, are the current incarnations of the winged heroes Hawkman and Hawkgirl.

The episode gets points for bringing almost the whole extended family together like a violent Thanksgiving dinner. This episode also features some of the best throw-away lines either series has ever had. From the use of the magnetic arrow to make the line "what guns?" work to Flash calling Damien Darhk "Flock of Seagulls" and asking if suddenly appearing is the only way Malcolm Merlyn knows how to enter a room. And lets not forget Cisco Ramon trying to convince Thea Queen to change her code name of Speedy.

There was a lot of comic fan service in the episode… Hawkman calling Green Arrow "Robin Hood" and the like… but the story itself was good and didn't feel like we were stepping away from the series to set up another show. Things still moved forward in both series overall story arc. Plus Oliver's potential discovery at the very end will likely be a huge deal in the future.

The second part of the event airs tonight, called Legends of Today. There is a trailer for the episode below along with a behind-the-scenes segment with Flash show runner Gabrielle Stanton.
