DC Comics Now Says Supergirl Was Created By Jerry Siegel And Joe Shuster

Supergirl was created as a female counterpart to Superman in 1959 by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino in 1959, and first appeared in Action Comics.

She now has a TV series and, although she doesn't have her own comic right now (both a digital and a print version are in production I'm told), a version of her does appear in Justice League 3001.

Intriguingly, however, the creator credit has changed. Here is how it appears on the TV show.

That credit for Jerry Siegel's family is a result of a lot of legal wrangling over the decades. Supergirl is derived from Superman, which is what generates that credit, but there is none for Binder and Plastino.

And as of last month, this is how the comic book credit ran as well. From Justice League 3001 #5.

Justice League 3001 (2015-) 005-003

With Supergirl based on characters created by Siegel and Shuster. I don't think anyone could argue with the truth of that.

But this week, things changed, And in Justice League 3001 #6, it read thus,
Justice League 3001 (2015-) 006 (Cypher 2.0-Empire) 022

Which… is not true. Supergirl was not created by Siegel and Shuster. Based on a character created by them, true. But full creation? The late Plastino and Binder might have something to say on that matter…

Is this the new deal? Bob Kane all over again?
