Female Thor Haters Of The Message Boards And Gods Of Asgard Now Agree In Mighty Thor #1

Lvenger posted on the Comic Vine message boards thirteen months ago,

And no this isn't about Thor losing the hammer, it's about trying to pander to the growing female demographic of comic book readers on the basis of making a 'big female hero' with a 'male mantle' that only demeans both Thor and Fem Thor as well as rely on a gimmick. And I'm sick and tired of the support this book is unjustifiably getting as well as the fools who fail to see it for what it is. Let them cling to this false Thor if they want to, I want no part of it because I'm an actual Thor fan who likes the character for who he is

On the Marvel boards, meadfam wrote,

I really DISLIKE this Thor. She is selfish and a thief. She feels sorry for Thor and even plays with his emotions by kissing him and throwing into his face that the hammer has chosen her.  TO TAKE SOMEONE ELSE S POSSESSION AND NAME. IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER WHO SHE REALLY IS, I DON'T SEE WHAT THE MYSTERY IS ALL ABOUT. I WILL NEVER LIKE THIS THOR AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BEING FEMALE! I'M BACKING ODIN ALL THE WAY. I HOPE THAT WHEN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE IS RE-ESTABLISHED IN MAY, THE ONE AND ONLY THOR WILL RETURN IN ALL HIS GLORY.

And also on those boards, Willpower 2050 wrote,

You can even kill off Thor and have a female take up the mantel, but to have someone else claim to be Thor, when the original is still walking around, doesn't really work, SINCE IT IS HIS NAME. Its sort of like super heroic identity theft. Even so, that doesn't stop the fact that it can be changed back just as easily.

Emphasis mine. Well from the new Mighty Thor #1 out today, you can't deny that the creators were listening to the complaints…

All over the place.

Who knew there was a direct line from the message boards to Asgard bill posters? Just don't trip over that spare hammer hanging around….

But seriously, the comic does lead with something rather unexpected and moving, an emotional procedural portrayal of Jane Foster's treatment for cancer, a world away from the gleaming spires of Asgard. The contrast could not be clearer, and the wish fulfilment of a power fantasy more stark – including the price of getting what you ant as being getting what you once wanted…
