Wal-Mart Subsidiary Bans Black Friday In Its Stores

Asda is the British chain of supermarkets owned and controlled by Wal-Mart.

Three years ago it, along with Amazon.co.uk, were principle in promoting the concept of Black Friday Sales in UK stores.

And everyone seemed to follow suit with the American tradition of post-Thankgiving sales. Even though, as a nation, we don't celebrate Thanksgiving.

Well now Asda has decided enough is enough and is trying to put the genie back in the bottle. It is simply not taking part. After only two years, it cites shopper fatigue on "flash sales on big-ticket, non-essential items at Christmas". Instead they say they will take £26m off prices across the Christmas period.

It has been criticised for distorting usual patterns of Christmas spending, pulling forward the sales at a time when usually retailers can more readily get full price for the goods they are selling.

One store John Lewis says says that because they commit to match prices against other stores, commercial director Paula Nickolds says "John Lewis has no choice. We are part of this whether we want to be or not. We are absolutely committed to our Never Knowingly Undersold pledge and this means we are part of this event."

So if you are looking for big discounts on games, Blu Rays, TVs, whatever… time to go to John Lewis. Or Tesco. Or everyone else…
