In an interview with Collider, producer Charles Roven — a producer on all of the Christopher Nolan Batman films and the upcoming slate of DC Comics-inspired films — revealed a brain trust helps chart the course of the films. Roven said the group consists of John Berg, an executive vice president at Warner Bros., Zack and Deborah Snyder, himself and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns.
He was also quick to add the individual directors of the upcoming films will bring their own visions to the characters and emerging DC film world. “We’re also bringing in really talented other filmmakers and having them come in and create—I call it the sandbox,” he said. That sandbox will be leading to the second part of the planned Justice League movie, but offers the characters some leeway to guest in each others’ films.
And while the group makes plans for that sandbox, the directors can offer paths to their goals. Roven likened it to planing a trip north via California’s Interstate 5, and the director coming in and asking, “What if you took the 101?” U.S. Route 101 is a winding, longer and more scenic trip up north. “All of a sudden you realize you can actually get to where you need to get to by a whole different methodology than what you originally planned,” he said. “Or you might decide to blend the routes. And by doing that it’s very fresh. You’ve got very fresh ideas, very interesting ideas.”
While many of those ideas are still charting their course, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will arrive on March 23rd, 2016.
