According to The Wrap, a sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is in the works at Sony, but out is star Rooney Mara, with co-star Daniel Craig and director David Fincher also likely departing. Even the sequel to the book upon which the film is based, The Girl Who Played with Fire, is being replaced.
A source “individual familiar with the studio’s thinking” told the site the film will be based on the recent Millenium Trilogy continuation, The Girl in the Spider’s Web with a new script by Steven Knight. Web continues the story of hacker Lisbeth Salander after the three novels by the late Stieg Larsson, who intended to write ten novels in the series before his death in 2004. Author David Lagercrantz took up the character and setting.
They also hear word that The Danish Girl and Anna Karenina star Alicia Vikander is a favorite to take over the title role.
