CBS' Supergirl Premiere Plan Includes A Ninety Minute Episode Of Scorpion

We've known for a while that CBS will be debuting Supergirl on October 26th at 8:30 PM after an episode of their hit series The Big Bang Theory. That would leave them on a half-hour block, so how would they fill that to get to 10 PM? They are doing a ninety minute version of Scorpion. Which is kind of surprising and shows just how much the network wants fans to watch the new Monday night block of shows.

A 90 minute version of an hour-long drama becomes a problem when it comes time for repeats and syndication. It can't be split into two-parts and unless they have a special 22-minute segment that will get cut in later showings… it just becomes a hassle. They easy solution would have been to do a double episode of BBT going into Supergirl or slap another half-hour comedy on after.

But instead they are counting on their big hit comedy to bring in people who might not normally watch superheroes and keep them on the half hour since all the other major networks are showing hour dramas at that time. Then get folks to watch through Supergirl and again be at the half hour and stay with Scorpion getting the folks who tuned in for the new series to stick around for what will be the series following the show regularly.

It's not a normal way to debut a new series, but it is pretty clever.
