Bungie Knew That The Detiny Leveling System Wasn't Great At Launch

Destiny_Guardians-600x337Destiny's original levelling system has always been controversial. The 'light level' system was quite restrictive, and dictated the gear you could wear when it launched last September. It was also confusing to those who didn't understand it, and caused a lot of people to drop off after that game's main campaign.

In a new interview with Kotaku, creative director Luke Smith says that Bungie knew that the way it worked was a little botched when the game launched. Smith admitted:

The original Light system, when that went out the door, we were not thrilled with it. We knew when that went out the door that we were going to need to revisit it. So that work basically began in earnest probably September or October [of 2014]. We had already started to work on a new proposal, the proposal that would become the Light 2.0 that's in the game now. We were working on that as early as last fall

The Taken King really has helped to address this problem, with progression making a lot more sense. It hasn't been entirely changed, but recontextualise so that you always feel like you are progressing. Hopefully, this will continue to be reiterated on to really perfect it over time.
