Junx 'N' Punks

Junx'n Punks by J. Cebron Cook and Mark Harmon
Kickstarter runs until October 16th with a publishing date of no later than February 2016

Junx'n Punks, an all-ages adventure comic mashing up elements of Steampunk, Dieselpunk, Pokemon, Transformers and 1980s Saturday morning cartoons, has launched on Kickstarter. It stars a group of young survivors in the distant future who physically bond with an adaptable alien race, giving them special abilities in order to fight for their freedom.

j1J Cebron Cook writes,

The concept for Junx'n Punks started sometime in the late 90s. Being a lover of all things Collectible Card Game, (CCGs like Overpower, Doomtown, MechWarrior, Magic, Pokemon, C*23, etc), I had developed what I thought was a killer RPG / CCG mashup for the wrestling genre called Squared Circle. My buddies and I would play for hours every week and I thought, maybe I'll take a stab at a more traditional gaming genre, fantasy. A world was created, a set of rules were written up, and background characters were developed to provide backstory and something to quest towards. Unfortunately, I never reached the testing phase. The world and the story became more important to me than the game so I shelved the project. It stayed on that shelf for a long time, and so did I. Almost ten years without lifting a pencil. Like so many, I took some time off pay the bills and start a family.

In 2008, the How to make Webcomics book helped me to jump back in the game with my attempt at a Webcomic, Shattered Myth. But when I opted to retire Shattered Myth a few years later and start something new, I didn't have the artistic skill necessary to give Junx'n Punks life. Not to do it right. Hiring an artist meant two things: Finding the perfect match for the story, and being able to pay that artist the page-rate they deserve. Two years ago, I found Mark Harmon hiding somewhere in the mountains and we slowly started putting this thing together. But funding issues have kept progress at a snail's pace. Creating pages in small sections to spread out the cost, it's taken us close to a full year to get where we are, but Junx'n Punks is nearly ready for the spotlight. We're turning to Kickstarter for funding to get this issue in print, pay for some excellent rewards and hopefully, get the next issue produced on a more reasonable schedule.

The comic itself is about 95% penciled and inked, with only colors and letters remaining. The feature rewards are special CCG-style trading cards, harkening back to the series' gaming roots. There's an Ultimate level that also includes Oversized CCG-style prints, which have the artists' full, untouched artwork on the reverse side. You could cameo in the series or pledge to reward levels that include collected versions of Shattered Myth. You could even get a custom one-of-a-kind steampunk top hat styled after Plink, one of the main Junxior characters in the series.

j3As a special shout-out to Bleeding Cool readers, if we can kick this campaign into high gear, I'm offering something special. Help get us across $1000 and I'll add an additional trifecta of CCG-style trading cards to all rewards that include them. That'll bump the total number of CCG cards from six to nine. Think of it as an early stretch goal (of course, we still need to get 100% funded).

ABOUT J. CEBRON COOK
J. Cebron Cook, (Joe), is the writer / creator of Junx'n Punks. He's also handling the coloring and lettering duties for the first issue. Like many, he gave up on comic creating dreams somewhere along the way to pay the bills and start a family, returning to the medium with the webcomic explosion around 2008-2009. His previous work, the now-retired webcomic Shattered Myth is still available online. He lives with his just-evil-enough-to-be-fun wife and two awesome girls near Kansas City, where they shamelessly enjoy the best BBQ in the country.

ABOUT MARK HARMON
The illustrator of Junx'n Punks is Mark Harmon, creator of Robot 6, Pest Control, and The Incredible Flying Jellybean. Mark is a professional illustrator for kids' books, comics, comics for kids, and anything in between. He currently lives in the small town of Mountain View, Wyoming. Mark wasn't available to work on Junx'n Punks when it was first proposed. Rather than find another artist, it was shelved yet again. This time for a good reason. Mark is the perfect fit for Junx'n Punks, bringing a fun style that also just happens to involve robots and steampunk. Joe and Mark have been working together on Junx'n Punks behind-the-scenes for close to two years.
