SDCC '15: The Orphan Black Panel – A Character's Sexuality Is Not The Most Interesting Thing…

IMG_3225Ashley Piderman wrote for Bleeding Cool from San Diego Comic Con,

Well, this was a highlight for me. My entire con schedule was worked around this one panel. I have become obsessed with this show over the last couple of years. I laughed through the entire panel and my checks hurt by the end of the hour.

Now no major hints happened for what will be happening in season four, but of course, questions were asked about how Delphine's story ended in that finale. I'm definitely in the fan group that wants her back.

The show creators, John Fawcett and Graeme Manson really seem to dig that we, as fans, are all up in arms, the caught up in the mystery of it all how the season ended, and we as fans were encouraged to go with it.

Jordan Gavaris addressed the possible end of Delphine in the context of the artistry of the show. He spoke about how the show has tries to not put any part of any character's personality to carry more weight than another, referring back to character's sexuality not being the most interesting thing about each character. He emphasized the importance of treating the relationships that the characters have with the most "honesty, artistry, and integrity" and that in treating these characters that way, there has to be the ability to end relationships at any time, to prevent the story from getting stale and exploiting the relationship damages the artistic integrity of the relationships.

But the world still wants Delphine back, as Retta the fantastic host reminded the panel.

I'm always impressed by how Jordan Gavaris comes across. I encourage you to YouTube his video addressing Felix's flamboyant sexuality to a member of the media. The whole discussion was fantastic, but this little counselling session has really stuck with me. Maybe it's because I could identify with Delphine because she is bi-sexual as well, maybe it was that she was a successful woman, or might be that I just have a massive crush on her. Whatever it may be, this little reality check should help me come to terms with whatever is revealed of Delphine's fate next season.
