Comic Book Law School 202: Selling the Sizzle

While almost every creator will tell you their greatest joy is in the act of creation, none will argue that equally (or perhaps more) important is earning a living from their efforts. But commercializing creative works is fraught with peril unless you're prepared. This second stage of the case study focusing on fictional author Fitzgerald Scott will concentrate on Scott's efforts to commercialize his critically acclaimed new work, The Strange Situation of Benjamin "Button" Cabeza. Noted attorney Michael Lovitz, author of the acclaimed The Trademark and Copyright Book comic book, is joined by entertainment attorneys Mona Metwalli and Terri Lubaroff for an interactive seminar tackling a number of the more advanced issues facing creators (and the businesses that hire them) in marketing their properties and creative ideas, including licenses and transfers of rights; key things to know when Hollywood comes knocking; publishing, manufacturing, merchandising, and distribution agreements; understanding key terms in contracts, assignments, and licenses; and (time permitting) how your spouse may impact your contracts and licenses. With insights into a variety of options and opportunities for generating income from your creative endeavors, along with discussions focusing on the problems and pitfalls that go hand in hand with each decision, you'll agree this session shouldn't be missed. [Please note, the Comic Book Law School seminars are designed to provide relevant information and insights to practicing attorneys, as well as practical tips to creators and other professionals who may wish to attend. Comics Arts Conference #6: The Scientific Study of Comics' Visual Language

Recent work in cognitive science has examined the makeup of the "visual language" of comics and its cognition in the brain. Neil Cohn (University of California, San Diego) will provide an overview of this scientific approach to comics, setting the stage for three presentations that directly coded 40 comics each for properties within and across panels. First, two studies explore the changes in structure that have occurred in American superhero comics from the 1940s through the present. Ryan Taylor(University of California, San Diego) will report on how text and images interactions have changed in the service of storytelling over time. Then, Kaitlin Pederson(University of California, San Diego) will detail how page layouts have become more systematic across the decades while also growing in complexity. Comics Arts Conference #8: Robin, Joker, and Catwoman at 75: How the Kid, the Clown, and the Cat Changed Comics and Culture

In the spring of 1940, Bob Kane, Bill Finger, and Jerry Robinson created the first superhero sidekick, the original supervillain, and the bad girl criminal who would forever cross the hero's path. By adding Robin, the Joker, and Catwoman, the creators not only expanded Batman's cast but broadly changed comic books forever. Why did they make such an impact? Why have they endured? Were these characters so successful simply because each was the first of its kind? Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight), Will Brooker (Batman Unmasked), Greg Capullo(Batman), Danny Fingeroth (Superman on the Couch), Gerard Jones (Men of Tomorrow),Lee Meriwether (Batman: The Movie), David Uslan (The Rise of Superheroes and Their Impact on Pop Culture), and E. Paul Zehr (Becoming Batman) take a look at why Kane, Finger, and Robinson created each of these characters, evaluating these creations with regard to the Zeitgeist for 1940, the repercussions of the Comics Code Authority, and the fluctuating standards over time. Changes in these characters reflect the specific changes that defined the Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age, and later comic book eras.

The Gay Agenda in Horror: Terrifying Subtext

The horror genre is based on our fears of the unknown, fear of "outsiders," and the attraction and repulsion of giving in to transgressions and forbidden passions. These elements have also been associated with the LGBTQ community mostly in a negative sense. All the way back to horror stories of the late 1800's, Dracula, Dorian Gray, and more, the subtext of gay and lesbian characters and themes was unspoken, hinted at, or inferred. But in the last few decades subtext has become "text." In novels from Anne Rice and others, to films and TV shows like The Hunger, True Blood, Hellbent, andAmerican Horror Story, the queer side of horror has come out into the light. Join Prism Comics and moderator Michael Varrati (Tales of Poe, Sins of Dracula) as they discuss the history of this popular genre from a queer perspective. Panelists will include Andy Mangels (Nightmares on Elm Street, Childs Play, Star Trek, Star Wars Comics) and Mark Bessenger (Bite Marks, The Last Straight Man).

This Looks Like a Job For . . .

Have you ever been asked what superpower you would like to have? A research study conducted by Keith W. Beard, Psy.D. (professor of psychology, Marshall University),April Fugett, Ph.D. (associate professor of psychology, Marshall University), and Josh Carter, Britani Black, and Elijah Wise (doctoral students, Marshall University) examined how your choice of superpower may influence occupational interest and career choices. The choice of a superpower was compared to six occupational themes/categories. Certain superpowers are uniquely associated with one of the six occupational themes, suggesting that certain superpowers are frequently desired by people in particular career areas. This information could be used for such things as career counseling, focused marketing toward certain outlets, and guiding individuals toward leisure time opportunities and hobbies.

Hall H and Ballroom 20 Friday Playback Free Play

Didn't get into Hall H or Ballroom 20 today? We feel your pain! On hand to kick off the panel will be the assistant to the director of programming for Comic-Con, Tommy Goldbach, in this two-and-half-hour block that rebroadcasts some of the day's popular panels from those two giant rooms. Best of all, those in attendance will get to vote in a show of applause on what they want to see. It's democracy at its finest, and it's a second and maybe even a third chance to see these panels. (Please note: these playbacks will include only the panel discussions. None of the film clips or footage shown at the live events will be shown here.)
