Secret Wars Beats Loot Crate As Marvel Increase Marketshare For May 2015
Loot Crate reportedly put half a million sales onto Boom's Bravest Warriors: The Adventures Of Holo John #1 last month and has seen Boom's market share in the industry double on the back of that one comic book. Though it is still not clear how many copies actually made their way into the hands of Loot Crate subscribers…
But it wasn't enough to beat Secret Wars #1 from Marvel Comics which, reportedly, has sold over half a million too.
This is the first time a Loot Crate-included comic book has not topped the month's charts. Previously, Amazing Spider-Man, Walking Dead, Star Wars and Orphan Black all topped the chart in the month they were published.
Everything else in the chart was Secret Wars, Convergence or Star Wars, with Marvel getting 7 to DC's 2 and Boom's 1.
In March, Marvel had a fifteen point lead in terms of marketshare over DC Comics. In April, the lead shrank to around 3 points on the back of the Convergence event and Marvel's overall marketshare fell back with it. But now it's Secret Wars and Star Wars time, and Marvel's lead is back up to over 15%.
Marvel's share of the comic book market dollars, the retail share, in March 38.82% shrank to April's 34.15% but is now back up at 40.17%.
While its share of sales of individual comics, the unit share which had fallen from 41.53% to 36.33% jumps back up to 41.11%.
DC Comics still have the Convergence effect but it is lesser in its second month. Their retail share which had risen from 23.01% to 30.91% has now fallen back under the psychologically important mark of 30% to a meagre 25.43%.
And their unit marketshare, which had risen from 26.13% to 33.9%, has crashed back to 26.04%.
Image's dollar marketshare has fallen back in the light of this 8.89% down from 10.23%, and a unit share of 12.98% down from 10.28% but still keeps a psychologically important north-of-ten-percent share of sales.
Boom got a boost, beating Dark Horse – but again this is down to one singular Loot Crate sale, rather than sales in comic book stores.
IDW's dollar share moved from 6% to 5.06% and unit sales share from 4.78% to 3.82%. Dark Horse, up from 3.65% to 3.83% and 2.92% to 3.43%. Boom, from 2.17% to 3.96 % and 1.98% to 7.16%. Dynamite, from 2.05% to 2.22% and 1.78% to 1.82%.
The massive disparity between retail share end unit share for Boom is likely to be that they sold Bravest Warriors to Loot Crate, through Diamond, at a very considerable discount.
As for overall sales, they are down 10% on last year, but that's a five week April compared to a five week May. Overall, this year is beating last year in sales by a considerable margin.
