Denver Comic Con '15: The Women Of Whedon

This Sunday morning's Women Of Whedon Panel included appearances by Jewel Staite (Firefly), Amy Acker (Angel and Dollhouse), Emma Caulfield (Buffy) and was moderated by fellow Whedon alum Clare Kramer. Amy shared some of her favorite memories of former cast member Andy Hallett (Angel) – who passed away from heart failure at age 33, Emma shared some of her mediocre attempts to prank people on the set and Jewel charmed the audience as usual. In light of recent questions raised about how both Joss Whedon and Marvel have demeaning views of women (following the recent Avengers: Age Of Ultron release) – it was wonderful to see such a great collaboration of strong female characters show their support and respect for their mentor. I think Jewel said it best when she voiced how little she approved of those "sitting behind the computer and say(ing) whatever the f**k they want" – reminding critics that just because you might be the director of a blockbuster film, it doesn't guarantee "complete creator control". She also went on to say how working with Whedon "spoils" you just as much as it empowers you – calling him a dear friend, which the rest of the panel seemed to echo as well.

Alan Tudyk (Firefly) also hosted a few entertaining panels this weekend to answer questions from fans and hand out an assortment of random signed merchandise – most being free items from his hotel room. Additionally he got a chance to talk about his new project Con Man – which raised over $3 Million on Indiegogo and will be coming to Vimeo in June. Created by Tudyk and produced by friend and former captain Nathan Fillion – the web series pokes fun at their Firefly roots and tells the tale of life on the convention circuit following the cancellation of their short-lived sci fi show (Spectrum). Not only are most of the episodes drawn from real life happenstance – the growing cast of characters is rumored to include fan favorites such as Gina Torres, Felicia Day, Seth Green and many more. Before leaving, Tudyk also made a stop by Denver Comic Con's Pop Culture Classroom – a kid-friendly nonprofit group that combines comics and learning – to do a special reading of popular children's story The Book With No Pictures by BJ Novak (The Office).
