Advance Review: Giant Days #3 Tackles A Social Media Scandal

IMG_0082

When I first started reading BOOM! Box's Giant Days, it quickly sky rocketed to my top five favorite comics. Following the lives of Daisy, Susan, and Esther was an enjoyable entertaining experience from day one. Seeing the girls survive a crazy flu last month was pretty funny, so I couldn't wait to see what John Allison had in store for the next issue. Giant Days #3 written by John Allison, with art by Lissa Treiman brings Daisy, Susan, and Esther will a full bill of health into a new set of problems. Esther finds herself in a dramatic situation yet again, when she discovers that she is on the man-site "Bantserve." Not only is she on the site, but she's ranked in the top three. Mortified by the unwanted exposure, the girls band together to get revenge on the set of creators.

IMG_0081So many parts of this issue are laugh out loud funny. Not to sound unsympathetic for Esther's character, but the state of panic at which everyone plunges into is amusing. For example, the discovery is initial made by secondary character Ed Gemmell, who's working on a paper in the IT center. I adored the way Lissa Treiman illustrated the scene that I've posted above. Susan is such a tough strong character (although I can't wait to discover her inevitable gooey center), and to see a panic ridden person come into her quiet time was absolutely hilarious. Ed's character continued to make a mark on me as he helped come up with some dramatic solutions. I hope that he continues to have a reoccurring role in the series. Just as a side note, I want to applaud John Allison for putting the nod to the 90's by having Ed say "Should we destroy the backbone of the internet and return society to the simple pleasures of the early 1990s?" Since I'm a 90s kid, I could relate to and appreciate that statement.

IMG_0079I don't want to give away how the issue ends up, but I can promise you that it is definitely worth a read. I think it's something that we can all kind of fear and relate to now that social media is such a big part of our every day lives. Allison continues to write a fantastic script, and Treiman's illustrations are a delight to look at. Be sure to pick up your copy of Giant Days #3 this week!
