Cullen Bunn's Hellbreak #2 Will Leave You Terrified

I think it's going to take me awhile to recover from the horrifying feelings that the new issue of Hellbreak brought out of me. However, you know what that means…it was one heck of a heart-pounding issue. From Oni Press, written by Cullen Bunn, with art by Brian Churilla, and colors by Dave Stewart, Hellbreak #2 explores what happens before the extraction team ventures into hell. This is something that I was definitely curious about from the moment I heard about the concept that the comic centered on. So as a reader, I was happy to have some important questions answered by the end of the second issue.

Personally, it doesn't take much to freak me out. However, anything involving devil possession and exorcisms are at the top of my list. So the answer is yes, I held the comic far away from my face as I read. I cringed as a priest fell victim to a waterfall of vomit, and wanted to run away scared as another victim was entered into the facility completely restrained. With that said, I applaud Cullen Bunn for writing a script so creepy that I could actually imagine the possessed voices, and Brian Churilla for illustrating the victims appearances in way that displays how their bodies are affected.

The best part is, that's only the first half of the comic. The second half explores the extraction teams process in preparing for their journey into hell. As they stood close to one another, as a priest prayed over them for protection, I felt fear. That's good writing. I won't go into what happens when they go down there, but wow is it spectacular. Cullen Bunn has proven once again that he is a fantastic writer who knows how to hook us and leave us with our jaws dropped. There's so much about this comic that leaves a mark on you, so I urge you to pick up a copy if you're looking for a really immersive experience.
