32 Thoughts About 32 Of Today's Comics – They're Not Like Us Brides Of Helheim…

Layout 1

Don't worry Twilight Zone: Shadow And Substance! I know there are lot of big comic books out today. We've already talked about a bunch of them. But there are so many more to dig into… here's a cool thirty…

Convergence - Blue Beetle #1 (2015) - Page 14

Convergence: Blue Beetle recreates a proto-Watchmen from the proto-Charlton heroes that inspired it, including their own laws against costumed adventuring,…

Convergence - World's Finest #1 (2015) - Page 17

So there are some parts of the Convergence event that have been a little… repetitive. Some have managed to break out of that but in the end they keep coming back to the does, the challenge from Telos and the challenge posed by other reality cities. Again and again and again. Convergence: Worlds Finest manages to do what no other has done and turn it into a strength, one in a number of bizarre encounters over decades in this world, as catalogues by a cartoonist journalist. And for Paul Levitz and Jim Fern, with Joe Rubenstein bringing an classical edge on inks, to create something that could have beeb mediocre, but instead stands next to the likes of Tom Strong in terms of incorporating so many ideas in a smooth story, Book of the week, and a really surprising one for that.

Convergence - Justice Society of America #1 (2015) - Page 15

Okay, after that experience, time for a cuppa. It may not give you any powers in Convergence: Justice Society Of America, but it probably still gives you a bit of a pick up in your old age… and look, America, learn, making tea with boiling water!

Convergence - Plastic Man and the Freedom Fighters #1 (2015) - Page 12

It may only be drawn by John McCrea. But someone he manages to slip a little Garth Ennis into Convergence: Plastic Man.

crossed

Where Kieron Gillen just goes further with Crossed: Badlands #76, turning my stomach in a way that Garth Ennis never quite managed. I feel truly sickened, please, is there anything out there that can…

Convergence - Shazam! #1 (2015) - Page 15

Thank you Convergence: Shazam. Sometimes I just need a talking tiger.

wayward

Or, apparently, a racist spider, from Wayward.

Convergence - Infinity Inc #1 (2015) - Page 16

And in Convergence: Infinity Inc, possibly the stupidest example of putting yourself in danger I have ever seen since Lois Lane threw herself off Niagra Falls – but who would really chase a chicken off a top storey roof? Okay, I'm sure some people have, but still….

Convergence - Detective Comics #1 (2015) - Page 11

And with Red Son Superman making his second appearance in two titles, we get a very readable retelling of the Convergence dome story in Convergence: Detective Comics through Soviet propaganda….

Of course these parallel dimensions are starting to stack up aren't they? Soon you're going to have a problem…

skull

…such as in Skullkickers

Eric Stephenson does have a tendency to rummage through the most successful comics his publisher is putting out, picking out really cool bits and ten rearranging them into new DNA for his own titles. So this kind of imagery may be more associated with the likes of Jonathan Hickman, but it slots in rather beautifully into They're Not Like Us…

Pisces #1 launches with one message. Don't read comic.

Image (83)

Secret Avengers ends with bangs and whimpers all over the place, and a meeting of minds between Agents and MODOKs on a porch under the beating sun…. a strange, beautiful, moving, silly comic book that will be judged as a classic. Some day. Consider it a future Nextwave.

More finality from The Fantastic Four #645, it's last issue until the DVD of the movie has moved out of its promotional window. Just don't ask. But do enjoy what happens when you give your daughter so much power… she is still just a kid. And I wouldn't like to be the evil jerk….

Image (79)

Princess Leia gets trapped by stormtroopers fire, But, they are still terrible shots. I reckon its their visors, they just can't see out of those slots properly.

Image (76) As is pointed out, in the early days of The Incredible Hulk, this kind of thing used to happen all the tim, from Ultron Forever. Shame folk wouldn't put up with it these days…

Image (74)You know I know this Tony Stark is meant to be inverted from the previous Tony Stark. But I don't know, in Superior Iron Man, he seems pretty consistent to me…

Blood Queen Vs Dracula #3

brides

Brides Of Helheim #11. The undead warrior Rikard, denied the promise of Valhalla, pauses in a quiet moment with the Valkyrie Sigrid. I know some folk believe the world owes them a living. Well Rikard is choosing a different verb…

Layout 1Battlestar Galactica: Six #4 sees the Cylon in question getting a makeover. Going for te retro seventies look, it seems…

Judge Dredd #29

Still there are worse looks for a robot to take such as from Judge Dredd

Fiendship is magic #5

My Little Pony: Fiendship Is Magic kicks off with history and geography as an explanation of modern evil, which may sound a little relativist for some tastes for such young minds…. but don't worry, It's being read by forty year old men. Forty-three in my case,

G.I. Joe #8

G.I. Joe #81 has a full grasp on how the gotcha media twists minor mishaps into career shaming scandals. Anyway, you know the granny was asking for it.

Hellbreak-1

The Kerberos team is starting their next mission into Hell in Hellbreak #11 and are wary of the danger that awaits them. Maybe they've just googled Goat.se …

Warning, do not google Goat.se

I'm too late, aren't I?

Layout 1

Devilers #6 looks like they are getting a similar hellish view….

Jem #2

Jem And The Holograms #2 gets one hater. Just one? This is the internet, what is wrong with it? Gandhi would get more haters. In fact, he gets more haters now and he's been dead for decades.

Layout 1

King: Jungle Jim #3 brings a new element to the ongoing theological debate over divinity and humanity. And, as with so many other cases, it all comes down to whether or not you can miracle up some odour eaters or not…

More Than Meets The Eye #40

Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #40, for the first time, brings you far less than meets the eye…

TMNT #45

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #45 may leave you thinking it's all about Donatallo… but look who else is back! And I do approve of the cricket bat, It's just so much more classy, don't you think?

Today's comics courtesy of Orbital Comics, London, launching a Music & Comics Gallery on Friday, 12 comic artists have been tasked with taking an album of their choosing, and creating a new piece of cover art for it, with proceeds going to Brain Tumour Research. And on Saturday are running a Free Comic Book Day that they say won't hand out random grab bags and won't run out by midday. Londoners know what they are getting at…
