Final Fantasy XV Has An All Male Cast To Make It "Approachable"

The discussion of female representation in video games has been raging for years now. As the medium has matured, people have started asking more serious questions about games from an artistic as well as commercial standpoint, especially when it comes to gender.

That is what makes Final Fantasy XV's director Hajime Tabata comments on the lack of women in the game interesting. When speaking to Gamespot, Tabata said:

Speaking honestly, an all-male party feels almost more approachable for players.

Even the presence of one female in the group will change their behaviour, so that they'll act differently. So to give the most natural feeling, to make them feel sincere and honest, having them all the same gender made sense in that way.

This is a pretty weird justification, with it essentially saying, men can't feel sincere and honest around women.

I'd be playing dumb if I pretended to not know what he is getting at though. He is making a game about boys beings boys with each other. Having a women in that dynamic could change the feeling of their social group. It's totally fine to explore those ideas and it's the developers right to tell the story they want.

There is just probably a more graceful way of putting it though.
