The Glorkian Warrior Returns, Hungry For Adventure Pie

Glorkian_Warrior2_coverA vicious Space Snake thrashes through the endless twilight sky, its pink and yellow body writhing furiously to ditch the unwanted inhabitants off its back. The Glorkian Warrior's grip on the serpent's hide remains tight as he tries to reposition his legs around the beast's thick, elongated torso. Doing figure eights and loopty-loos in the sky, it's like a rollercoaster of death and our hero does not have his seatbelt on. The beast roars in frustration, sending chills of doom down the Glorkian Warrior's spine, but the mission must be accomplished and this Space Snake must be destroyed. Will this be the end of our hero? Will he finally meet his demise?

Of course not, this is an all-ages comic!

The Glorkian Warrior Eats Adventure Pie is the second installment of James Kochalka's Glorkian Warrior series. Based on the indie video game from PixelJAM Games (available at iTunes), the Glorkian Warrior continues onwards to his next adventure, this time not involving pizza, but rather pie. Lots and lots of pie.

Joined once again by his best friend and sidekick Super Backpack (the Gallant to his Goofus), Glork deals with new characters and obstacles in his ongoing journey to keep his sector of space under control. Gonk and Baby Alien return to the second volume, causing more of a hindrance to Glork than help, but he doesn't see it as that way. So what if Baby Alien loves to suck out Glork's brains? He's hungry and does it out of love! And Gonk head-butting people and constantly talking about his love for pie? Not distracting whatsoever! To Glork, this is his family. To Super Backpack, this is purgatory.

One of the issues Glork tackles this volume is bullying, with the introduction of rival Glorkian Warrior Buster Glark and his sidekick backpack Toby. Buster likes to wander into Glork's patrol sector and cause trouble, especially when Glork is indisposed. Buster likes to make Glork look bad, then laugh about how he's going to report his clumsy behavior to the Glorkian Supergrandma. Bottom-line, he's not a nice guy, making the reader passionately hoping to see him get his comeuppance by the end of the book.

Glorkian_Warrior2_page76After Buster and Toby freeze and capture Baby Alien, playtime is over as Glork makes it his mission to rescue his beloved baby brain leech. There's so much action in this second volume that you almost think Michael Bay wrote and illustrated it; Spaceship chases, explosions, Space Snakes, giant alien invaders and more. Readers of all ages will definitely be entertained, especially the younger ones.

The dialogue between Super Backpack and Glork continues to be the highlight of the book, continuing with the book's goal of being an extremely enjoyable read, no matter the demographic. Kochalka knows what younger readers like, and very skillfully walks that fine-line of creating something that not only parents can enjoy with their kids, but something that comic readers in general will find most charming and wildly imaginative. Oh, and tons of fart jokes.

The Glorkian Warrior Eats Adventure Pie is a real winner, making you definitely hunger for the next Glorkian Warrior adventure on the starry horizon. Like a true pie, it's filling.
