Move Over Mario, Link Is The Best Selling Amiibo; Toys To Offer Sections Of Classic Games

10991121-4-e1415180800291Mario has long been the face of Nintendo, and to some extent, all of video games for decades. If these Amiibo numbers are anything to go by though, he may not even be the most popular character in Nintendo's own house.

In numbers published today, it was revealed that a total of 5.7 million Amiibos have been sold to date. While Mario was most popular in Australia, Link proved the most popular Amiibo in Japan, North America and Europe.

There's some cool new functionality coming to Amiibos too. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced that soon Amiibos would offer portions of classic titles on Nintendo consoles.

We are also planning a free-download app for Wii U in which you can enjoy NES and Super NES games with your amiibo in the first half of this year. With this app, once you tap your Amiibo on the NFC area of the GamePad, you will be able to play highlighted scenes of one certain title for NES or Super NES.

You cannot play the entire game due to a time limit, but another tap of the Amiibo will enable you to try another highlighted scene in the game. We hope that when you tap your Amiibo, the quickly changing game scenes will pleasantly surprise you and make you feel as though you have just exchanged a game cartridge.

This actually gives Amiibo their first really cool functionality I think. These are selling like hot cakes as toys though, so extra functionality is only a bonus.
