Evolve Creative Director Defends DLC – Doesn't Want To Be Seen As 'Underhanded'

evolve-behemothI'm really enjoying Evolve. I got a fair amount of time to sit down with the game over the weekend during the game's beta and play has really impressed me. There are a few balancing issues to be fixed, but all in all, it looks like I might have a fun new multiplayer game to jump into once the it launches.

One thing I am severely less impressed with though is the game's, frankly, egregious DLC options. The amount of it is staggering and the number of packs you can buy that promise you this doodad or that is mind boggling. It really does make a game look like a DLC delivery system, even if I know it is not.

The game's creative director Phil Robb has been talking to Destructoid about the game's DLC situation and has tried to justify the sheer amount of it. He explains how the bad press was a tough time for him.

That was hugely disheartening for me. I don't like people thinking we're doing underhanded, dirty shit.

We have the game set up in such a way that we can expand upon it if that is the desire. Our plan is one we pushed for as consumers. Never split the community, no pay to win, all that kind of bullshit that are hallmarks of DLC plans specifically made to leech money out of people.

Robb then went on to discuss how DLC, and the way it is treated in the industry is not helping what is, on the surface, a good idea.

I don't quite understand the knee-jerk negative reaction to DLC. Because I know for me, as a gamer, when I have a game I really love and I play it for a while and I want more, I want more. I'll pay for it. I don't mind

I think a lot of people probably feel like [DLC] is milking the community. That's fair because a lot of companies approach it that way.

Robb talks plenty more with Kyle McGregor over on Destructoid. It's well worth a read if you are interested on finding out more about the explanation for the game's DLC plans.

As for Evolve, I'm still not completely convinced. I don't doubt that Robb actually feels this way about the DLC, but in functionality, I'm just not certain I can get behind it. The amount on offer pre-release is insane, and even if you like buying DLC, Evolve's plans are conveluted and confusing.

I do hope the best for the game because as I said, I'm having a ball with it. More on that later though…
